Fascinating to find another person with almost identical interests (travel graphics, Central Europe etc), though I havn't pursued things as diligently as you. I did start earlier, however, when brochures and emphemera in this field were less valued and perhaps easier to find than now. Hungary and Prague in the 1980s were a happy hunting ground! All the best, Mike

The brochure covers from Japanese-occupied Manchuria in the 30's were especially interesting -- do you have the actual brochures? As a historian of modern China, I'd be very interested to see how these areas were being presented as (of all things) tourist destinations -- and I bet others would be, too. Thanks for the great site. I accidentally fell in looking for info on a much earlier SS Republic, and stayed awhile. Central European design from the 1920s and 1930s is so vivid; particularly illustration and the use of modern type. I wish our current commercial design was as exciting. In the German travel materials, I assume that the sudden departure from modernism to a softer more sentimental style ca. 1936 was likely a way for illustrators to distance themselves from the so-called entartete kunst. Or was my impression just due to the samples shown on the site? hungry_i@eudoramail.com

Hello! Lovely website. As one who visited family in France, England and Switzerland many times as a child, I really enjoyed all the artwork. The styles were so beautiful then. Travelled on the Dutch Line, The Cunard and the French Line, and many trains, also that pesky English Channel crossing. Actually I came looking for the Bridlington travel picture (which I already have framed) because I have ancestors and relatives there. Thank you so much for the opportunity to see all this. Thank you! I'm awestruck. I entered Friday afternoon. I've been enchanted/enthralled this weekend. I sincerely doubt I'll ever spend another weekend in better company! My name is Kane Walent, I live in Madison, Wisconsin, USA (walenk@yahoo.com). My mother is/was a commercial fashion artist. My interest in graphic design is life long albeit "amateur." I'm writing a novel which is set in part in Switzerland in the late 1930's. The wonderful images you've shared, will, I'm sure, be an inspiration/evocation. Thanks again for sharing your wwonderfull collection!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hallo ! - This is an excellent website and source for graphics from the 20's and 30's of the last century. I enjoyed looking at the pictures and will continue to do so - one can spend days here. It would be a great idea to publish the entire material as a CD-ROM with large resolution... - I would definetly buy one. Hans Kobschaetzky - email: hans.kobschaetzky@t-online.de

Dear David I stumbled across your site after a Google search for information about today's great roads in Italy. What a fantastic site. I've only just scratched the surface so I'm going back in now to look some more. To my mind, European graphic design from the Twenties and Thirties is hard to beat. Beautiful. One day I shall buy the 1937 Ariel Red Hunter motorcycle I've long coveted, then I shall set out with a period travel guide to see how much things have changed. Keep it up, the site is a real jewel. Best wishes Mick Phillips Rome, Italy

Happening upon your site while researching for a graphic design project, was a real treat! Refreshing and nostalgic! I was infected by the same bug that bit you. I found myself trasported to places I had been with a sense of dejavu. Also transported back in time when real world events shaped opinions - and could have invariably crippled world travel- a new bold era and reawakening emerged in the graphic design within that era. I now feel juiced by what you just shared with me upon visiting your site!!! Thankz! Heidi rottingflesh@telus.net

I find this website facinating as an ex British Aiways Designer having worked on three of their Identities. I always find it really interesting looking at original hand drawn artwork, we have it really easy these days compared to what was involved with producing artwork then! I am one of the last generation of designers who learnt to do artwork the old fashioned way but now work on computer. I still get to use the drawing skills I developed doing conventional arttwork, computers are a great tool, but they are just a tool, designers need to be taught to think , something which I feel has become sadly lacking in design education. I congratulate you on a wonderful collection and a source of inspiration! Steve Bridgeman, Freerange Design, Manchester, England. steve@freerangedesign.com

I'm always wary of writing comments in Guest Books - invariably they can all too sound either sychophantic or ridiculous . . . but I run that self same risk now, when I write that I have found this site to be a well conceived and produced one, dealing with a fascinating subject : ah, the "Golden Years" of travel! But why no railways?? I wish you much success with this site. K. Fincke von Finckenstein

Hi! Beautiful site. What a collection! I like the emphasis on good design from the early and mid-20th century. More to come? Jan S Stockholm

I studied with Herbert Matter in the 1970s when he was a professor at the Yale Art School. I collect whatever I can find of Herbert's work, but I have never seen some of your archived posters and booklets before. I will return again and again. Thank you. peter.w.johnson@yale.edu
